What Is the Different Between a Smog Check and a Smog Test?

Smog Check and a Smog Test

A smog check and a smog test are the same. The difference is whether you get the smog check at a test only station, which is not what Dhillon Motorsports, formerly known as Smog Man San Jose, CA, is. We will not only give your vehicle a certified smog check, but we will also repair it if it fails.

Smog Check

A smog check tests your vehicle's emissions' system to ensure it is operating properly. If your car or truck's exhaust system isn't functioning as it should be, your automobile may release toxins into the air that are harmful to the environment and cause greenhouse gasses. Every vehicle releases a certain amount of these toxins, unless they're electric, but California demands these emissions be under a certain level. This is why you have to have your vehicle smog checked every two years – to ensure the emissions are under the California legal limits.

Smog Check Versus Smog Test

When you bring your vehicle in for a smog check, you have the option of taking it to a smog check and repair facility, like us, or a test only station. When you bring it to us (or another certified smog check station), we will conduct the test and print a report with the results. If your car or truck passes the smog check, we will print the certificate you need to send into the DMV with your registration renewal. If your vehicle doesn't pass the test, we will determine why – such as a faulty oxygen sensor – and repair the issue for you.

A test only station will only conduct the test. If your vehicle fails, it won't diagnose or repair the problem. You will have to take your automobile to a smog repair station to have the repair work performed. Let's assume that it is your oxygen sensor. The test only station is not equipped or certified to replace it. The only thing it does is test. It doesn't check to see why it failed. Seems kind of counterproductive to take your car or truck there, doesn't it? If it does fail, you need technicians to diagnose the issue and repair it before they retest it.

Dhillon Motorsports, formerly known as Smog Man San Jose is that station. We can test your vehicle's emissions and diagnose and repair the problem if it doesn't pass. Call us today at 408-999-0699. We are the best smog check center in San Jose, CA.
